Bhubaneswar: A two-day national workshop on gender and social inclusion in disaster management began in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, aimed at strengthening governance and inclusive strategies in disaster risk reduction across India.
The workshop is being organised jointly by the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Senior officials from the National Disaster Management Authority, the Government of Odisha, OSDMA, and the United Nations Development Partnership Educational Institute attended the event.
Addressing the participants, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo lauded Odisha’s global recognition in disaster management, calling the state a role model for others.
“This achievement reflects the government’s commitment, dedication, and sincere efforts in the field of disaster management,” he said.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari emphasised that the government has consistently prioritised disaster preparedness at the grassroots level. He noted that efforts are being made to protect citizens and minimise casualties by leveraging experiences gained from managing past natural disasters.
Additional Chief Secretary and OSDMA Managing Director Deoranjan Kumar Singh highlighted the authority’s focus on community participation and volunteer capacity building.
“Early preparedness and rapid response are crucial during emergencies. OSDMA strives to remain close to the people to protect them during critical situations,” he added.
The workshop provides a platform for disaster management experts to share insights, discuss best practices, and promote integration and coordination across states.
Participants also highlighted the growing threats posed by climate change, calling for greater public awareness, engagement, and responsible action. They affirmed that OSDMA, UNFPA, and partner organisations will continue promoting science- and technology-based initiatives to strengthen disaster management and encourage participation from all sectors.
