Bhubaneswar: Odisha is facing a significant manpower shortage in its police force, with 1,784 Sub-Inspector (SI) posts lying vacant across the state, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the Assembly on Monday.

In a written reply to a question by Kendrapara MLA Ganeswar Behera, the Chief Minister detailed district-wise vacancies, stating that the Commissionerate Police accounts for 237 vacant SI posts, followed by Rourkela with 83, Puri with 82, Mayurbhanj with 75, Angul with 70, and Sambalpur with 64, among others.

Majhi further informed the House that the vacancy position in the rank of Inspector of Police stands at five. In the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) cadre, the state currently has 180 vacancies. To address the shortfall, 99 Inspectors have already been promoted to the rank of DySP, and their posting orders are under consideration.

The Chief Minister added that DySP posts are filled through both direct recruitment and promotion, and the government is taking steps to streamline the process.
