Bhubaneswar: Odisha has recorded a total of 1,832 drowning cases over the past three years, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the state assembly on Monday.
In a written reply to a question by Jatani MLA Bibhuti Bhusan Balabantaray, the Chief Minister said that 1,750 people drowned in rivers and 82 in the sea during this period. Among river districts, Cuttack reported the highest number of drowning cases at 179, followed by Keonjhar (160) and Mayurbhanj (154). In the sea, Puri recorded 62 cases, Ganjam 13, and Jagatsinghpur six.
To curb such incidents, CM Majhi said the Odisha Fire and Emergency Services has instructed all state fire stations to identify sensitive locations in rivers, sea, and other water bodies and conduct awareness campaigns.
The move aims to prevent people from venturing into hazardous waters and reduce drowning incidents across the state.
