Bargarh: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday extended her greetings to the people of Odisha on the commencement of the famed Dhanu Yatra in Bargarh, which began on Wednesday evening.
Hailing the festival’s distinctive character, Murmu said the unparalleled tradition of the world-renowned open-air theatre has given Dhanu Yatra a unique identity not only in India but also internationally. She expressed hope that the festival’s vibrant enactment of mythological narratives would further strengthen spiritual awareness and cultural pride in society.
“I hope that through the lively presentation of mythological stories, spiritual consciousness and cultural pride will be further nurtured. I extend my best wishes for the successful organisation of this colourful journey,” the President said in separate posts on X in Odia and Hindi.
During the festival, Bargarh town is transformed into ancient Mathura and Gopapur, where episodes from ‘Krishna Leela’ are enacted, depicting Lord Krishna’s triumph over King Kansa.
The Odisha government has sanctioned ₹1 crore for organising the festival this year. Arrangements have also been made to live-stream the theatrical performances across the state and in several parts of the country, allowing a wider audience to witness the cultural spectacle.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also conveyed his greetings on the occasion, describing Dhanu Yatra as more than just a festival.
“The world’s largest open-air theatre, the globally acclaimed ‘Dhanu Jatra’, is a unique reflection of Odisha’s rich culture, traditions and artistic heritage,” he said in a post on X, wishing people well on the occasion.
The 11-day-long festival, now in its 78th edition, will continue until January 3.
