Bhubaneswar: The final rites of Jitamitra Prasad Singh Deo, the revered Raja (King) of Khariar and a distinguished scholar were performed, with his mortal remains being taken in a grand procession through the streets of Khariar.

According to reports, thousands of people, including dignitaries and locals, participated in the procession to pay their last respects. Many educational institutions in Khariar have also declared a holiday to honour his memory and contributions. The atmosphere was filled with grief and reverence as people from all walks of life came to bid farewell to the revered Raja.

Born on August 29, 1946, the esteemed historian and archaeologist, Singh Deo, passed away at 1:35 pm on Sunday after experiencing sudden chest pain. His wife, Rani Rajashree Devi, was present by his side during his final moments.

A revered royal figure, Singh Deo was widely acclaimed for his remarkable contributions to history and archaeology.

A product of Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, and a double doctorate holder from Sambalpur University and Sanskrit University, Tirupati, Singh Deo was a prolific writer and researcher. He authored 19 books on history and anthropology, which are widely used as textbooks in various universities across India and abroad.

His contributions to the field of research and exploration are immense, with several historical sites in Nuapada district being discovered under his guidance. The Raja’s demise has left a void in the academic and cultural circles of the region.

It is pertinent to mention that Raja Jitamitra Prasad Singh Deo ascended the throne of Khariar in 2004, following the passing of his father, Anup Singh Deo. His legacy as a scholar, researcher, and royal figure will be remembered for generations to come.
