Nuapada: A leopard allegedly strayed into Deosil village under the Soseng section of Sunabeda Sanctuary in Nuapada district and killed a calf, triggering panic among local residents, forest officials said.
The calf, belonging to villager Byasadeb Majhi, was tied along a village path on Monday night. Villagers spotted its carcass on Tuesday morning and informed the Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary authorities. A team of forest officials and experts visited the spot and, after an on-site investigation, confirmed that the calf had been killed by a leopard.
The Forest Department has installed camera traps in the nearby forest to track and identify the animal. Officials have also used loudspeakers to alert villagers against venturing into the forest and advised them to remain indoors after evening as a precautionary measure.
