Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued a yellow warning for cold wave conditions in several districts of Odisha, cautioning residents to remain alert as winter chill continues to grip parts of the state.
According to the evening bulletin released by the IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, cold wave conditions are very likely to prevail in isolated pockets of Jharsuguda, Sundergarh, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khordha and Angul districts till Sunday morning.
Despite the cold wave alert, the weather is expected to remain dry across Odisha, with no rainfall forecast for the coming days. The IMD said dry weather is most likely to prevail over all districts of the state during the next 24 hours and is expected to continue for at least a week.
For the subsequent 24-hour period, from Sunday morning to Monday morning, the yellow warning for cold wave conditions will continue, though it will be confined to fewer districts. Sundergarh, Jharsuguda and Angul are likely to experience cold wave conditions in isolated pockets during this period.
The weather bulletin noted that minimum temperatures across Odisha are likely to rise gradually by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next two days, with no major change expected thereafter. However, night temperatures in interior and western districts continue to remain low, contributing to cold wave conditions in select areas.
In Bhubaneswar and its surrounding areas, cold wave conditions are also very likely to prevail during the next 24 hours. The IMD has forecast a maximum temperature of around 27 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of about 10 degrees Celsius for the state capital.
Meanwhile, the IMD clarified that there is no weather-related warning for fishermen along the Odisha coast for the next five days, indicating relatively stable sea conditions during this period.
The current synoptic situation shows a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Sri Lanka coast, which is moving west-northwestwards and is expected to cross the north Sri Lanka coast. However, the system is not expected to have any significant impact on Odisha’s weather, with dry conditions continuing to dominate the state.
The IMD has advised people, especially in cold wave–affected districts, to take necessary precautions and remain updated with the latest weather forecasts.
