Bhubaneswar: Odisha recorded a total of 2,29,881 cognisable crimes in 2025, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the state assembly on Monday.
In a written reply to a question by Rajanagar MLA Dhruba Charan Sahoo, the Chief Minister provided a detailed breakdown of crime across the state and highlighted the key measures being taken to maintain law and order.
The Chief Minister said that the top ten categories of crimes reported in the state include murder, dacoity, robbery, burglary, theft, swindling, rioting, rape, motor vehicle accidents, and miscellaneous offenses. These cases were spread across different districts, reflecting both urban and rural crime challenges in Odisha.
To curb crime, the government has intensified policing measures. Round-the-clock patrolling is being conducted, along with random checks of vehicles in transit. Strict surveillance of suspicious persons is maintained, and night-time restrictions are enforced in sensitive areas. Vehicles moving on state highways are closely monitored, and inter-state coordination meetings are held regularly to track criminals operating across state borders.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the role of the Special Task Force, Bhubaneswar (Special Operations Wing), which has been actively investigating and preventing organised crime and drug-related offenses. Regular coordinated operations are carried out against narcotic crimes in collaboration with neighboring states. Modern investigative techniques, including DNA profiling, cyber forensics, sniffer dogs, fingerprint analysis, narco tests, CDR tracking, and e-evidence apps, are being extensively used to strengthen law enforcement.
Special attention is also being given to crimes against women and children. Dedicated units have been formed to investigate rape, sexual assault, acid attacks, human trafficking, POCSO cases, and murders, while the State-level Women and Child Crime Prevention Branch, Bhubaneswar, works in tandem with police to ensure prompt action.
The Chief Minister emphasised that these measures, combining intelligence-based policing with modern technology, aim to ensure public safety and reduce crime in the state. Inter-state coordination, vigilant monitoring of public spaces, and proactive patrolling remain central to Odisha’s approach to tackling crime.
