Bhubaneswar: In a rare and enchanting display of marine life, a pod of dolphins was spotted frolicking in the coastal waters off Puri beach today, bringing joy and excitement to both tourists and locals. The playful creatures were first noticed in the morning, leaping and swimming close to the shore in a lively mood.
Sea bathers and tourists stood thrilled, capturing the moment on their phones as the dolphins performed acrobatic feats amid the waves. Videos of the sighting quickly circulated on social media, capturing the amazement of onlookers.
Such close encounters with dolphins in the busy Puri Sea Beach area are considered uncommon. Locals observe that the absence of heavy mechanized fishing boats and trawlers in the vicinity, along with favorable sea conditions and abundant fish, may have encouraged the dolphins to venture nearer to the coast.
These marine mammals are more typically associated with nearby Chilika Lake, home to Irrawaddy dolphins and other species, where Odisha’s recent surveys recorded a healthy population of 765 dolphins.
Tourists described the event as a rare treat and a positive sign for the environment. “Dolphin sightings in Puri sea are rare and feel like a good omen for nature,” one visitor shared.
Earlier, some dolphins were also sighted playing in the Chandrabhaga sea in Konark.
