Puri: A monkey created chaos near the Singhadwara (Lion’s Gate) of the Shree Jagannatha Temple on Sunday afternoon after snatching a vanity bag from a woman devotee, leaving onlookers in shock.

According to reports, the bag contained cash and important documents. In a frantic attempt to recover the belongings, the woman’s husband climbed onto a small structure, locally known as a gumuta, near the Singhadwara. Armed with a stick, he tried to chase the monkey and retrieve the bag.

Eyewitnesses said the monkey moved aggressively around the area and at one point even chased the man, creating a tense situation near the temple premises. After considerable effort, the vanity bag was recovered, along with part of the cash.

The incident has sparked debate over safety and security arrangements around the temple. Questions have been raised about how an individual could access a structure near the shrine in a risky manner, potentially bypassing existing security protocols.
