Bhubaneswar: Large parts of Odisha experienced intense daytime heat on Saturday, with several western districts recording temperatures close to or above 40°C, according to the evening weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department’s Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar at 7:00.

The highest maximum temperature in the state was recorded at Jharsuguda at 40.2°C, followed closely by 40.0°C each at Sambalpur and Titlagarh. Temperatures also remained very high in several other western and northern locations, including 39.1°C in Rourkela, 39.0°C in Sundargarh, and 38.5°C in Bolangir.

In contrast, coastal districts reported comparatively lower maximum temperatures. The mercury touched 33.2°C in Bhubaneswar, 31.6°C in Puri, and 30.6°C in Gopalpur, reflecting the moderating influence of the sea.

Night temperatures showed a sharp drop in several interior and highland areas. The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at 15.5°C in Phulbani, followed by 16.6°C in Jharsuguda, 17.1°C in Rourkela, and 17.5°C in Daringibadi. Meanwhile, minimum temperatures in coastal areas remained higher, ranging between 24°C and 26°C.

Humidity levels remained relatively high across the state, particularly in coastal regions, though no rainfall was recorded at any station during the last 24 hours, the bulletin noted.

The data indicates a widening day–night temperature variation in interior districts, with western Odisha continuing to bear the brunt of the early summer heat.
