Berhampur: A 30-year-old man was brutally murdered in Ganjam district on Tuesday evening, triggering tension in the locality and prompting a swift police response.
The deceased, identified as Shiva Nahak, was attacked with a knife on the main road of Bhetanai village under Kotinada Police Station limits. According to preliminary reports, the assailant repeatedly stabbed Nahak, inflicting deep injuries on multiple parts of his body.
Family members and locals rushed the critically injured Nahak to the Aska Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
On receiving information, Aska SDPO Santosh Kumar Jena reached the crime scene and launched an investigation. Police sources said Nahak had returned to his native village from Surat just a day before the incident.
The murder occurred in front of a liquor shop in Bhetanai village, adding to the shock among residents.
Acting swiftly, a police team led by Kotinada Police Station IIC Damodar Bihari conducted raids and detained the prime suspect, identified as Dhanu Mohanty. The weapon used in the crime, a knife, has also been seized.
While the exact motive behind the हत्या is yet to be established, police suspect past enmity between the accused and the victim may have led to the fatal attack. Further investigation is underway.
