Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Fisheries Department has imposed a 61-day fishing ban along its entire coastline from April 15 to June 14, 2026.
As per the state government’s decision, all types of trawlers and mechanised boats (except traditional and motorised boats up to 8.5 metres in length) are prohibited from venturing into the sea for fishing during this period.
The annual ban is enforced to protect marine resources during the breeding and spawning season of fish and other marine species. The period also coincides with rough sea conditions, making fishing unsafe. By restricting large-scale fishing activities, the government aims to allow fish to spawn safely, increase their population, and ensure long-term sustainability of marine stocks.
The ban is expected to severely impact the livelihood of thousands of fisherfolk, especially in coastal districts like Ganjam. Most families in the sea-facing villages depend entirely on daily fishing for their income. With their primary source of earning stopped for two months, many families are likely to face financial hardship.
Authorities have warned that any violation of the ban will result in confiscation of boats and strict legal action under the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act.
