Rayagada: Two persons, a father-in-law and his son-in-law, died in separate incidents after allegedly falling from a moving train in Rayagada district, police said on Friday.
The deceased have been identified as Lingaraj Saha (80) and his son-in-law Sudam Nayak, a resident of Tikai village under Kesinga area in Kalahandi district.
According to preliminary information, Nayak had taken Saha to Visakhapatnam in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh for cancer treatment on April 23. The incident occurred during their journey on the Korba Link Express.
Police said Saha reportedly fell from the train near platform number 5 of Rayagada railway station, leading to his death. Later, Nayak is suspected to have fallen from the train in the Dahikhala station area under Muniguda block.
Investigators suspect that Nayak may have panicked after failing to locate his father-in-law and subsequently fell from the moving train. It is also suspected that the duo were travelling in a crowded compartment.
However, officials said the exact sequence of events remains unclear. While the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) indicated that the incident may have occurred during the onward journey to Visakhapatnam, family members claimed it took place while the two were returning after treatment.
Police said post-mortem of Nayak’s body was conducted at the Muniguda Community Health Centre and the body has been handed over to his family. The process of handing over Saha’s body is underway.
Separate cases of unnatural death have been registered, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities said further details would emerge after completion of the probe.
