Patna: Two members of a family were killed and another injured in a road accident in Bihar’s Supaul district on Saturday after a speeding truck rammed into a motorcycle near Anant Chowk on NH-27 under the Bhimpur police station limits.

The collision, which occurred on the Murliganj branch canal bridge, claimed the lives of a grandmother and her grandson on the spot, while another youth sustained critical injuries.

The deceased were identified as Saraswati Devi (60) and Ganesh Kumar (15), residents of Bhura Pathra under Triveniganj block.

The injured, Kuldeep Kumar (20), is undergoing treatment at the Narpatganj Community Health Centre.

According to an official, all three were travelling on a single motorcycle and were returning from a wedding in Maskan village in Araria district.

As they reached the canal bridge near Anant Chowk, an unidentified speeding truck approaching from behind hit them with great force.

The impact was severe, and the two pillion riders — Saraswati Devi and Ganesh Kumar — died on the spot, while Kuldeep Kumar suffered critical injuries.

The truck driver fled the spot immediately after the accident.

Following the incident, angry locals staged a protest by blocking NH-27 for nearly three to four hours.

The blockade caused massive traffic disruption, with long queues of vehicles stretching approximately four to five kilometres on both sides of the highway, leaving commuters stranded for hours.

Protesters alleged negligence on the part of the police, claiming that Dial 112 personnel present nearby failed to act promptly or attempt to apprehend the truck driver.

On receiving information, Station House Officer (SHO) Mithilesh Pandey of Bhimpur police station, along with SHO Pramod Jha of Chhatapur police station, reached the spot with their teams.

The Supaul Headquarters Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) also arrived with a riot control team to manage the situation.

Circle Officer Rakesh Kumar engaged with the protesters and worked to pacify them.

Former RJD candidate Baijnath Mehta also reached the site and helped calm the grieving family members.

He spoke to Superintendent of Police Sharath R.S. and assured the family that appropriate compensation would be provided.

Police have sent the bodies to Sadar Hospital, Supaul, for post-mortem examination and have initiated further investigation.

The administration said compensation would be provided to the family of the deceased as per government norms.
