Kolkata: A mishap took place inside the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in West Bengal’s Kolkata when an elevator cable snapped during maintenance work due to which three labourers sustained serious injuries on Tuesday, officials said.

According to airport authority officials, the incident took place around 1 p.m. at elevator number 34, located in the airport’s bus lounge.

It was told that this elevator had been out of service for several days to undergo repairs.

The cable snapped suddenly while the maintenance work was in progress.

The lift came down abruptly on the staff members who were working in the shaft.

Several individuals were injured in the accident, three of whom sustained serious injuries.

The area near lift number 34 has been cordoned off and maintenance work is underway, an airport official told.

The Kolkata Airport authorities have said that one of the injured individuals sustained multiple fractured ribs. Two others suffered head injuries and severe trauma to their lower bodies.

Among them, there is a concern that one individual may have sustained neurological damage.

All three are currently undergoing treatment in the hospital.

According to the airport official, an investigation is underway to determine how the accident occurred.

Incidentally, on March 19, Arup Banerjee, a resident of Dum Dum in North 24 Parganas district, died in a lift accident at the Trauma Care Building of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Arup Banerjee had visited the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to seek medical treatment for his young son.

In the early hours, an injured Arup was recovered from the one of the lifts at the trauma care centre of the hospital after it malfunctioned. Doctors subsequently pronounced him dead.

The preliminary post-mortem report said that 41-year-old Arup had sustained multiple injuries across his body. He suffered fractures to his hands, legs, and ribs, and sustained ruptures to his heart, lungs and liver.

Five persons, including three lift operators, were arrested in connection with this incident.
