Bhubaneswar: In a significant step towards eco-friendly tourism, the Odisha government is set to introduce electric boats at major tourist destinations across the state.
The Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) has already invited tenders for the first phase of the project, which will cover five key locations. This initiative aims to replace conventional and diesel-powered boats with environment-friendly electric boats, thereby reducing pollution and the dependence on fossil fuels.
In the first phase, a 30-seater electric boat will be deployed at Kolab in Koraput. At Hirakud in Sambalpur, two boats — one 20-seater and one 10-seater — will be introduced. Bhitarkanika in Kendrapara will get a 20-seater electric boat, while Barkul on Chilika Lake in Khordha will receive an 8-seater luxury electric boat.
These new boats will be equipped with modern facilities, combining electric vehicle technology with solar power and CNG options. This hybrid arrangement will ensure greater sustainability, reliability, and a comfortable experience for tourists.
