Baripada (Mayurbhanj): Eight persons were arrested following a clash between two groups of youths in Mayurbhanj district, police said on Saturday.
According to Mayurbhanj Additional Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar Gochhayat, the incident occurred on May 29, 2026 (Friday), involving youths from the Baripada and Dukura areas over a dispute that escalated from a roadside exchange into multiple confrontations at different locations.
The Additional SP said a group of Baripada youths had gone to the Lulung picnic spot, while another group from Dukura had gathered for a birthday celebration. Trouble began in the evening when the Baripada group was returning and had a brief verbal altercation with some Dukura youths standing by the roadside.
Though no immediate violence occurred, the situation escalated later at Rangamatia village under Sadar police limits, when members of the Dukura group allegedly intercepted the Baripada youths, leading to a heated exchange and a subsequent clash.
The confrontation further intensified near Rathpadia in the Bada Bazaar area, where both groups allegedly engaged in pushing and shoving. During the incident, the vehicle carrying the Baripada youths was also damaged.
Police said the Baripada group later proceeded towards the Town Police Station, but the Dukura youths allegedly chased them, and another clash broke out near the police station premises.
Police personnel intervened promptly and brought the situation under control. No major injuries were reported, though some individuals sustained minor injuries to their hands, Gochhayat said.
Two cases have been registered at the Town Police Station under Case Nos. 325 and 326, based on complaints from both sides. Police have arrested eight persons in connection with the incident, and all the accused were forwarded to court, the Additional SP said.
