Jeypore (Koraput): A man was allegedly beaten to death in Koraput district over suspicion of practicing witchcraft, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place in Jhadiguda village under Ghoomar panchayat of Baipariguda police limits. The deceased has been identified as Narayan Minarbalia of the same village. According to reports, Kamalochan Karalia of Jhadiguda was unwell.
On Tuesday night, Narayan Minarbalia reportedly visited Kamalochan’s house to give medicine. Kamalochan died later that night. Kamalochan’s family suspected that his death was caused by witchcraft. They raised suspicion on Narayan, who had come to the house.
Following this, Kamalochan’s elder brother Haribandhu Karaliya allegedly attacked Narayan. It is alleged that Narayan was beaten on the face and head with a wooden mallet. He died on the spot.
Villagers have demanded strict action against the accused. Officials from Baipariguda police station and the Koraput Scientific Team reached the village and have started an investigation. Police are examining the circumstances of both deaths. Further details are awaited.
