Bhubaneswar: A powerful Kalbaisakhi storm swept across Bhubaneswar on Saturday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and hail in some areas, disrupting normal life across the Odisha capital.
The weather changed abruptly around 3:30 PM as dark clouds engulfed the city, followed by intense rain and thunder. Hailstones were reported from several localities, while gusty winds uprooted branches and damaged trees in many parts of the city.
The storm caused temporary disruptions to road traffic as fallen tree branches blocked several stretches. Power supply was also affected in some areas after electricity lines were damaged by strong winds and falling debris.
While the rain brought much-needed respite from the scorching summer heat, residents remained cautious amid thunder and strong wind activity. The sudden deterioration in weather conditions forced many commuters and outdoor workers to seek shelter.
Meteorological experts said the Kalbaisakhi activity has heightened expectations regarding the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Odisha. The monsoon is likely to reach the state within the next six to eight days, and the prevailing weather conditions could help accelerate its advance.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised people to remain vigilant, warning that Kalbaisakhi-induced rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds may continue in some parts of Odisha over the coming days.
Authorities are monitoring the situation and undertaking measures to clear roads and restore power supply in affected localities.
