Bhubaneswar: A woman and her daughter were allegedly murdered with an axe while asleep in their house in Giripali Khadiapada area under Sambalpur Sadar police limits.
The victims have been identified as Urkuli Patra and her daughter Lilima Joda.
According to reports, the mother-daughter duo was sleeping in the open courtyard of their house last night when the assailant attacked them with an axe, killing them on the spot.
Police suspected the murders are linked to sorcery and detained a youth from the neighbourhood. He is being interrogated in connection with the case.
Notably, Lilima Joda was staying at her parental home even after her marriage.
Upon receiving information, Sambalpur Sadar police initiated a detailed investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the murder. Further details are awaited.
