Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, a 48-year-old woman died after being attacked by a swarm of honey bees in Basuapada village under Sabarang police station in Bhadrak district.
The deceased has been identified as Basanti Lata Sahu, wife of Rajanikant Sahu. More than 12 other persons, mostly relatives and villagers, were also seriously injured in the bee attack.
The incident occurred on Thursday when a large number of relatives had gathered at the Basanti Lata’s residence for to attend death anniversary ceremony of her mother-in-law. While food was being prepared outside the house, Basanti Lata went to serve tea to the cooks. Suddenly, a large swarm of aggressive wild honey bees, which had built a hive on a nearby water tank, attacked the people present.
Panic-stricken villagers and guests ran in all directions to escape the swarm. Basanti was stung multiple times and suffered severe injuries. She was immediately rushed to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital. Later, as her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, where she succumbed to her injuries today.
The entire family is devastated by the loss, and an atmosphere of mourning prevails in the village.
