Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that conditions are favourable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon into more parts of Odisha over the next four to five days.
According to the IMD’s midday weather bulletin, the monsoon is also expected to progress into additional parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and southern Chhattisgarh during the same period.
The weather office stated that a low-pressure system and increased moisture incursion over the region are supporting the continued advancement of monsoon activity across eastern and central India.
The IMD has issued an Orange Warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty surface winds of 50–60 kmph, and heavy rainfall at isolated places in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, and Koraput districts.
Similar thunderstorm activity with gusty winds of 50–60 kmph is likely in Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Rayagada, and Malkangiri districts, the IMD said.
A Yellow Warning has also been issued for Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh districts, where thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are likely at isolated places.
In addition, the weather department has forecast hot and humid conditions at isolated places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh on June 15, 16, and 17, 2026.
The IMD has advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, avoid open areas during lightning, and follow local weather advisories issued by authorities.
With monsoon activity expected to strengthen further, several parts of Odisha are likely to witness increased rainfall and a gradual shift in prevailing weather conditions over the coming days.
