Keonjhar: The body of a newborn baby girl was found in a women’s toilet at the Anandapur Sub-Divisional Hospital in Keonjhar district on Sunday, prompting police to launch an investigation.
According to reports, the body was discovered by a woman who had entered the toilet. She immediately informed hospital authorities, following which staff alerted the police. Personnel from Ghasipura police station reached the spot and recovered the body.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated an investigation into the incident. The infant’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the cause and time of death.
Blood samples and other biological materials were collected from the spot in the presence of a magistrate and preserved for DNA analysis, according to reports.
Hospital Superintendent Dr. Krishna Chandra Das said the police were informed immediately and that CCTV footage from the hospital premises was being examined as part of the probe.
Preliminary inputs suggest that an unidentified woman was seen entering the area around 5 am and leaving shortly thereafter in a hurried manner, according to attendants of patients admitted to the women’s ward.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Kamal Lochan Panda said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident would become clear after analysis of CCTV footage, DNA reports and other forensic evidence.
