Bhubaneswar: A monkey that had injured at least 10 villagers in Nistipur village under Sanakhemundi block of Ganjam district since Monday night was electrocuted on Tuesday afternoon.
The animal died after coming into contact with a live electric wire in the village, said Berhampur Divisional Forest Officer Sunny Khokkar.
The incident triggered panic in the locality, with at least six injured persons aged between 17 and 50 years visiting the Adapada Community Health Centre for treatment. All of them were later discharged, said medical officer Bahana Das, adding that no fresh cases of monkey attacks were reported and the condition of the injured was not serious.
Forest officials had earlier attempted to capture the monkey and sought assistance from the Paralakhemundi Divisional Forest Officer to deploy a rapid response team equipped with tranquillisers. However, before it could be subdued, the animal came into contact with a live wire and died.
Digapahandi Range Officer Dibya Ranjan Sahu said awareness drives were being carried out in the area, urging people not to chase or provoke monkeys.
