Jajpur: More than 50 people fell ill in a suspected diarrhoea outbreak after attending a wedding feast at Haladidiha village under Binjharpur block in Jajpur district on Monday.
According to reports, villagers had gathered for a community wedding feast in the village, after which several attendees began complaining of loose motions and other symptoms of gastrointestinal illness since Sunday evening. The number of affected persons gradually rose to over 50.
Following the incident, a medical team from Binjharpur Community Health Centre (CHC), along with ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers and Anganwadi workers, rushed to the village on Monday. The team provided primary healthcare support, including ORS and basic medicines, to the affected persons and also carried out awareness activities in the area.
A local resident, Rashmiranjan Nayak, said villagers started falling sick shortly after consuming food at the feast. “Since yesterday evening, many villagers have been suffering from loose motions. Our ASHA didi came and gave us ORS and medicines immediately,” he said.
The Medical Officer-in-Charge of CHC Binjharpur, Dr. Khitish Kumar Nayak, said preliminary assessments indicate that the wedding feast could be the possible source of the infection. He added that medical teams have been deployed in the village and samples of food and water will be collected for laboratory testing to determine the exact cause of the outbreak.
Health officials said the situation is being monitored, and further action will be taken based on the test reports.
