Berhampur: A 23-year-old woman succumbed to burn injuries at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur on Monday, a day after she and her husband sustained burns at their residence in Ganjam district. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident following allegations made by the woman’s family.
The deceased, Anita Pradhan, was a resident of Mathura village under Khallikote police station limits. Her husband, Ramesh Pradhan, a daily-wage labourer, also sustained burn injuries and is undergoing treatment.
According to police, the couple was admitted to the hospital on Sunday night after suffering burns at their home. Anita died during treatment on Monday morning.
Family members alleged that the couple had been facing marital discord in recent days. Anita’s mother, Bhanumati Pradhan of Jhadiakhola village, lodged a complaint with Khallikote police, claiming that her daughter had been subjected to harassment and that frequent disputes had occurred between the couple.
She further alleged that the circumstances surrounding the incident were suspicious and sought a detailed investigation.
Police said a case has been registered based on the complaint. “The exact cause of the incident will be known only after a thorough investigation,” said Ramesh Pradhan, Inspector-in-Charge of Khallikote police station.
The couple had been married for about two-and-a-half years and are survived by their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
Further investigation is underway.
