Hyderabad: In a major heist, the driver of an ATM cash replenishment van fled with Rs 17 lakh in Hyderabad on Tuesday, police said.

The incident took place on the Rein Bazaar–Santosh Nagar Main Road, under the limits of IS Sadan Police Station, while cash was being transported for ATM replenishment.

According to police, the driver allegedly made away with Rs 17 lakh that was stored in a cash box inside the vehicle.

The accused is believed to have meticulously planned and executed the theft. After taking possession of the cash, he reportedly escaped from the scene on a two-wheeler, abandoning the van.

Following the incident, the IS Sadan Police registered a case and launched an investigation. Police teams are examining CCTV footage from the area to trace the suspect’s movements.

Special teams have also been formed to track down and apprehend the accused.

Police suspect an insider’s involvement in the job and have launched an investigation to identify possible accomplices of the driver.

Meanwhile, a Sub-Inspector of Police was caught red-handed while taking a bribe in Hyderabad.

V. Narsimhulu, of the Gandhi Nagar Police Station, was caught red-handed when he demanded Rs 1 lakh and accepted part of the bribe of Rs 50,000.

Officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) caught the SI around 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to ACB, the accused officer had demanded the bribe from the complainant to issue station bail and not to harass the complainant in future in a case registered against him.

The agency said in a release that the tainted bribe amount of Rs 50,000 was recovered from the possession of the accused officer at his instance.

The ACB arrested the accused officer and produced him before the Principal Special Judge for SPE & ACB cases.

The case is under investigation. The details of the complainant are withheld for security reasons, the ACB said.
