Jajpur: A Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Jajpur district on Tuesday sentenced a private tutor to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of his 15-year-old student, an incident that occurred six years ago.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict, identified as Ramakanta Biswal, a resident of the Korei area in Jajpur district. Special Public Prosecutor Pratap Kumar Ray confirmed that the court delivered the verdict after examining 19 witnesses and evaluating the evidence collected during the investigation.
According to case records, Biswal allegedly raped the minor girl multiple times during tuition hours in the year 2020. The matter came to light when the victim’s family members, along with officials from Childline, filed a formal complaint with the Korei police.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and subsequently arrested the accused under Section 6 of the POCSO Act, which pertains to aggravated penetrative sexual assault.
In addition to the prison term and fine, the POCSO court directed the Jajpur District Legal Services Authority to provide a compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the survivor.
