Bhubaneswar: With the Mahanadi river witnessing increased water flow following the recent flood situation, Water Resources Department Principal Secretary Shubha Sarma on Friday visited Mundali Weir and Naraj Barrage to assess floodwater discharge and review the state’s water management mechanism.

During her visit to Mundali Weir, Sarma inspected the floodwater flow through the Mahanadi river system and reviewed the controlled discharge mechanism. She held discussions with departmental officials on effective floodwater management, stressing the need to closely monitor water levels, river flow conditions and ensure the safety of downstream areas.

The Additional Chief Engineer, Central Irrigation Circle, Bhubaneswar, accompanied the Principal Secretary during the inspection.

Later, Sarma visited Naraj Barrage, where she reviewed the operation of the barrage gates through the modern Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system installed in the control room. Officials briefed her on the real-time monitoring of gate operations, water flow assessment and the efficiency of the automated gate management system.

Emphasising preparedness, the Principal Secretary directed field officers and technical staff to maintain round-the-clock vigilance, continuously monitor the functioning of the barrage gates through the SCADA system and respond promptly to any emerging situation.

The Chief Engineer (Mechanical), Bhubaneswar, and the Additional Chief Engineer, Eastern Division-I, Cuttack, were present during the inspection.

Officials informed that the operation of the barrage gates is being carried out based on continuous analysis of floodwater flow, upstream and downstream conditions, and scientific data.

The Water Resources Department has directed all field officers and engineers to remain on high alert to ensure the safe and systematic discharge of floodwater, with public safety being accorded the highest priority.
