Bhubaneswar: Eminent artist, art critic, and former Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi president Jagadish Chandra Kanungo passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday after battling age-related ailments. He was 86.

His demise marks the end of an era in Odisha’s art and cultural landscape, where he was widely regarded as one of the state’s most influential voices in contemporary art and heritage conservation.

Kanungo, who devoted decades to promoting visual arts, played a pivotal role in strengthening Odisha’s artistic institutions and preserving its traditional art forms. He served as the President of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi and had earlier worked as its Secretary for 16 years, contributing significantly to the Akademi’s growth and outreach.

A respected art critic and scholar, Kanungo made lasting contributions to the fields of contemporary art, heritage conservation, and art education. He edited the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi’s journal and was also the editor of the acclaimed art magazine Ranga Rekha, first published in 1986.

Kanungo was instrumental in organising numerous exhibitions, workshops, and cultural initiatives aimed at promoting Odisha’s traditional Pattachitra painting and showcasing the works of contemporary artists.

Expressing grief over his demise, noted artist Gajendra Prasad Sahu said Kanungo’s contribution to the art fraternity was unparalleled. “His place can never be filled. He was a kind, affectionate, and humble person who treated everyone with respect. Odisha has lost a great artist, mentor, and guide,” Sahu said.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to art and culture, Kanungo was honoured with the prestigious Dharmapada Award. His work earned him immense respect among artists, scholars, and cultural institutions across the country.

Tributes poured in from artists, academicians, and cultural organisations, who remembered Kanungo not only for his artistic brilliance but also for his commitment to nurturing young talent and preserving Odisha’s cultural legacy. His passing leaves a significant void in the state’s art fraternity.
