Baleshwar: Police on Monday arrested five persons for allegedly attacking a man with a sword and other weapons before robbing him of Rs 8,500 near ‘Nishi’ Hotel in Baleshwar town.
The victim, identified as Arif Mohammed, was initially taken to the Baleshwar District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) following the attack. He was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for further treatment.
According to Baleshwar additional superintendent of police Paresh Kumar Rout, the incident occurred when the five accused allegedly approached Mohammed near ‘Nishi’ Hotel and demanded money from him.
“When Mohammed refused to give them money, the accused allegedly attacked him with sharp weapons, including a sword, and kicked him. They then snatched Rs 8,500 in cash and fled the spot, leaving him in a pool of blood,” Rout said.
Following the incident, Mohammed’s father lodged a complaint at Baleshwar Town police station. Police registered a case under Case No. 316 and launched an investigation.
Rout said two special teams were formed to trace the accused and investigate the case.
“Under the supervision of SP, the two special teams worked on the case and arrested all five accused on Monday morning,” he said.
Police also recovered Rs 4,900 in cash, five mobile phones, a motorcycle and the sword allegedly used in the crime from the accused, Rout said.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
