Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) will soon install six High Wind Speed Recorders (HWSR) in Odisha to accurately measure extreme wind speeds during cyclones and severe storms.
Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre, confirmed the development and said these advanced instruments will significantly strengthen the state’s cyclone monitoring and early warning system.
The HWSRs are designed specifically to record high wind speeds associated with cyclonic disturbances, helping meteorologists gather precise real-time data. This will improve forecasting accuracy and support better preparedness and response during extreme weather events, which frequently affect Odisha’s coastal belt.
According to sources, the IMD has written to the state government requesting identification of suitable locations and provision of land in the coastal districts. The six High Wind Speed Recorders will be installed in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, and Balasore.
