New Delhi: In a significant boost to agricultural exports from the North-East, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) on Monday enabled the first-ever shipment of mustard honey from Tripura to Dubai, marking a major milestone for Dergang Farmer Producer Organisation and the state’s emerging honey sector.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the export consignment of 1 metric tonne of mustard honey opens a new chapter for Tripura’s beekeepers and farmers by connecting them to international markets through organised and export-oriented production.
The initiative is expected to encourage local farmer groups to explore overseas markets and diversify the state’s honey value chain.
“The export marks a new milestone for the FPO and the region by creating an opportunity for local beekeepers and farmers to access international markets through organised export-oriented production,” the ministry stated.
Government officials said the export is likely to improve price realisation for farmers associated with the FPO compared with opportunities available in local markets.
Enhanced access to global buyers is also expected to provide an additional source of income for beekeepers and promote the adoption of quality-focused production practices aimed at meeting international standards.
The initiative was supported by Salt Range Foods Pvt. Ltd., which worked closely with Dergang FPO to strengthen honey production and develop an export-oriented supply chain.
The collaboration helped the farmer collective gain access to international markets and integrate local producers into the export value chain.
The Commerce Ministry said the achievement highlights the potential of farmer producer organisations and industry partnerships in creating market linkages for agricultural products.
It is expected to motivate more FPOs and farmers across Tripura and the wider North Eastern region to focus on value addition, quality enhancement and exports.
