Kolkata: A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday sought a detailed report from the office of the Director General of West Bengal Police on the number of cases and FIRs registered against the Trinamool Congress general secretary and the party’s Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, in different police stations in the state.

The counsel for Abhishek Banerjee approached the High Court’s single-judge bench of Justice Sougata Bhattacharya, seeking clarity on the exact number of cases and FIRs registered against him at different police stations.

After a preliminary hearing on the matter in the afternoon, Justice Bhattacharya sought a detailed report from the office of the DGP.

While submitting the petition seeking clarity on the exact number of cases and FIRs registered against him, the counsel for Abhishek Banerjee also argued that since his client was a political person, so many cases had been filed against him out of sheer vendetta.

“We are aware that, so far, a total of eight FIRs have been registered against my client. However, I am not aware of the total number of cases going on against him. So, we want clarity in the matter. After the detailed police report, we will place our next line of arguments in the matter,” submitted Banerjee’s counsel to the court.

In his counterargument, the state government counsel said there was no question of political vendetta since all the cases against the Diamond Harbour MP were based on specific complaints registered against him.

Thereafter, Justice Bhattacharya’s bench directed the office of the state DGP to submit a detailed report to the court on the number of cases and FIRs registered against the Trinamool Congress general secretary.

At the same time, the court also directed the DGP’s office to submit a report detailing the subjects of the eight FIRs registered against the Diamond Harbour MP.

The next hearing in the matter will be on July 22, and by then, the office of the DGP will have to submit the report to the court.
