Thiruvananthapuram: A controversy over the alleged misuse of artificial intelligence to create a deepfake video targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached the Kerala police, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding immediate legal action and a detailed investigation into those behind the circulation of the content.

Kerala BJP State Social Media Convener Abhijith Radhakrishnan Nair submitted a complaint to the State Police Chief seeking registration of an FIR and action against those responsible for allegedly creating and spreading the video through social media platforms.

The complaint alleged that a Facebook account operating under the name Kaippadi Ansari circulated the video by manipulating original visuals connected to the G7 summit.

According to the complaint, AI technology was used to create a fake video showing world leaders in a manner allegedly insulting to the Prime Minister, with offensive remarks added before it was widely shared online.

The BJP said such deepfake campaigns cannot be viewed merely as political criticism, as they involve the deliberate creation of false content aimed at misleading the public and damaging trust in institutions.

“Artificial intelligence cannot be allowed to become a tool for spreading lies and attacking constitutional positions,” Abhijith said, adding that such actions pose a serious threat to democratic discourse.

The complaint sought action under applicable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, besides immediate removal of the video from social media platforms.

The party also submitted copies of the alleged video and other digital evidence to the police. The BJP representative said those behind the alleged deepfake should be identified and strict punishment ensured to prevent such incidents from recurring.

The complaint comes amid increasing concerns over the growing use of AI-generated content to create misleading visuals and videos. Political parties across the country have raised alarms over deepfakes being used to manipulate public opinion and spread misinformation.

The Kerala BJP said it would fully cooperate with the investigation and urged authorities to act swiftly to send a strong message against the misuse of technology.
