Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress has moved the Calcutta High Court seeking its intervention into post-poll violence in the state post the declaration of West Bengal Assembly election results.

Trinamool MP and lawyer Kalyan Banerjee’s son Sirsanya Banerjee, who has filed this Public Interest Litigation (PIL), on Tuesday, mentioned the matter before the division bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and requested an urgent hearing on the petition.

The lawyer alleged that more than 2.000 Trinamool workers and supporters have been injured in the post-poll violence, which broke out across the state after the Assembly election results were declared on May 4. He claimed that about 365 Trinamool Congress offices have been vandalised.

In the petition, Sirsanya Banerjee demanded that the Calcutta High Court immediately intervene to prevent this post-poll violence. Along with this, an investigation should be conducted by the appropriate agency into the attacks on Trinamool workers across the state and initiatives taken to establish a peaceful environment.

The division bench of Chief Justice Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen said that the case may be heard next Thursday.

Earlier, there were allegations of Lenin statues being vandalised in Murshidabad and West Midnapore districts. In addition, there were allegations of the BJP demolishing the Trinamool party office located in the oldest market of Kolkata, ‘Hogg Market’, located in the New Market area, with a bulldozer.

A public interest litigation has been filed in this matter too, and has alleged that isolated incidents of post-poll violence are taking place in different places after the change of government in the state. Even on behalf of Trinamool, their leaders are posting multiple videos of violence on social media.

In the wake of all these incidents, lawyer Ritankar Das had already filed a plea in the High Court, requested an urgent intervention and a hearing. The application may be heard on Tuesday itself by the bench of the Chief Justice.

Now, a case has been filed in the Calcutta High Court on behalf of Trinamool Congress on the allegations of post-poll violence.
