Puri: Ten fishermen from Andhra Pradesh were rescued after their fishing boat developed a technical snag and became stranded off the Puri coast on Sunday.

The fishing vessel, bearing registration number IND-AP-V5-MM-872, had set sail from Kakinada Fishing Harbour for a routine fishing trip when it reportedly suffered an engine failure at sea.

The malfunction left the vessel adrift after its engine became inoperative, and its anchor also failed to function, causing it to drift about 2–3 kilometres off the coast near a hotel in Puri, reports said.

On being alerted about the stranded boat, the Superintendent of Police directed immediate rescue measures. Police teams from Baliapanda Police Station and Penthakata Marine Police coordinated the operation and established contact with fishing boats operating in the vicinity.

A fishing vessel from Visakhapatnam subsequently reached the location and rescued all ten fishermen safely.

All the rescued fishermen were safe and were later sent back to their native village. The fishermen are residents of Chintapalli village in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district. Arrangements would be made to tow the disabled fishing vessel to a safe location.

Police said the timely coordination of marine units and local fishing boats ensured a swift rescue, with no casualties reported in the incident.
