Rayagada: A 108 ambulance team safely assisted the delivery of a baby girl inside an ambulance after a pregnant woman’s labour intensified while she was being taken to a hospital in Rayagada district on Tuesday, officials said.
The woman, identified as Bhanu Jagaranga of Chakunda village under Gudari block, developed labour pains in the morning following which her family contacted the 108 ambulance service.
An ambulance from Padmapur reached the village and began transporting her to the Padmapur Community Health Centre (CHC). However, her labour progressed rapidly during the journey, forcing the ambulance crew to stop the vehicle near Badnal village.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Jugal Kishore Sabar, assisted by ASHA worker Jyoti Majhi, conducted the delivery inside the ambulance. The team also included driver M. Madhab and assistant Ravi Sabar.
Following the successful delivery, the mother and the newborn were shifted to Padmapur CHC, where doctors examined them and confirmed that both were in good health, officials said.
Speaking about the incident, Sabar said the woman’s condition had become critical during transit, leaving the team with no option but to carry out the delivery inside the ambulance.
The prompt action of the ambulance personnel drew appreciation from local residents, particularly as the district’s remote areas often face challenges in accessing timely maternal healthcare due to difficult terrain and poor road connectivity.
