Bhubaneswar: A total of 136 elephants have died in Odisha in the last one and half years (2024-25 and 2025-26 September) due to various reasons, said Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia, in response to a question in the State Assembly on Tuesday.
According to the Minister, four elephants died due to poaching, while another four were killed in retaliation. Additionally, 42 elephants succumbed to electrocution, four died in train accidents and 31 died of diseases. Other natural causes claimed 31 more lives, and 20 elephant deaths remain unexplained.
In response, the government has taken action against those responsible, with 92 people arrested and cases filed. Efforts are being made to monitor the elephant population and prevent further deaths.
