Rayagada: At least 33 police personnel were injured on Tuesday when local residents protesting against the Sijimali Bauxite Mines clashed with the force in Shagabari village under Kashipur block. Protesters reportedly hurled stones and attacked officers with swords, axes, and other sharp weapons.
Locals in the Kashipur area have opposed the Sijimali Bauxite Mines project since the Odisha government approved it. The mines are being developed by a private company involved in metals, oil & gas, critical minerals, power, and technology. Construction work in the Shagabari area triggered strong resistance from the community, which has been demanding a halt to the project.
During Tuesday’s confrontation, Rayagada police personnel, including SDPO Girishankar Sahu, Kashipur IIC Dev Mallick, Andirakancha IIC, and over 30 constables, were injured. Seven of the officers are in critical condition and have been admitted to the Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital, while the rest are receiving treatment at Kashipur Community Health Centre.
In view of the law and order situation, the administration has imposed Section 163 in Shagabari village to prevent further unrest.
