Bhubaneswar: The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has granted recognition to seven government health institutions in Odisha for postgraduate medical education, creating 17 new diploma and DNB seats in Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anaesthesiology and Medicine.
Five district headquarters hospitals — Jagatsinghpur, Jeypore (Koraput), Phulbani (Kandhamal), Dhenkanal and Rayagada — have received recognition for Diploma in Paediatrics, with two seats each, taking the total to 10 seats.
The Jagatsinghpur and Angul district headquarters hospitals have also been recognised for Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with two and one seats respectively. Besides, Shaheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital, Koraput, has received recognition for four DNB seats in Anaesthesiology and Medicine.
The recognition is expected to expand opportunities for specialist medical training at district-level hospitals and strengthen healthcare delivery, particularly in remote and inaccessible areas of the state.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling said developing government hospitals as centres of quality medical education and training is a major priority of the Odisha government. He said the NBEMS recognition would help create more specialist doctors and contribute to improving healthcare services in the state.
Mahaling congratulated the concerned medical institutions, doctors, nursing officers and health workers for the achievement and sought continued cooperation to strengthen medical education and health services in Odisha.
