Bhubaneswar: Emphasising the vital link between environmental health and human well-being, AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas on Thursday said that a healthy environment is fundamental to building a healthy society.

Addressing a World Environment Day programme at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Dr. Biswas highlighted that nearly one-fourth of the global disease burden can be prevented through a healthy environment. He underscored the direct and indirect impact of environmental conditions on public health and stressed the need for collective efforts to preserve natural resources and promote sustainable living.

To mark the occasion, AIIMS Bhubaneswar organised a tree plantation drive on its campus, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and public health promotion.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Biswas noted that healthcare extends beyond hospitals and clinics and includes ensuring a clean, safe and sustainable environment. He described environmental conservation as a crucial component of disease prevention and overall well-being, urging citizens and stakeholders to adopt eco-friendly practices and actively contribute to environmental protection.

The plantation drive was led by Dr. Biswas and attended by Medical Superintendent Dr. Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy, Deputy Director (Administration) Lt. Col. Abhijit Sarkar, Senior Medical Officer and Head of AYUSH Dr. Prasanta Kumar Sahoo, Public Relations Officer Raj Kishore Dash, along with faculty members, staff and students.

The dignitaries reiterated the importance of collective action in safeguarding the environment and creating a sustainable future for coming generations.

The programme concluded with participants taking a pledge to promote environmental awareness, support green initiatives and work together towards building a healthier and more sustainable society.
