Sambalpur: A woman from Assam was arrested by Ainthapali Police in Sambalpur district on Tuesday for allegedly cheating a hotel and a taxi driver by leaving without clearing dues, police said.
The accused has been identified as Monali Hazarika, a resident of Assam.
According to police, the case was registered at Ainthapali Police Station (Case No. 184 dated 29.06.2026) under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a written complaint lodged by Gaurishankar Nayak, Manager of Hotel Narmada Residency in Ainthapali.
Police said the accused had checked into Hotel Narmada Residency on June 23, 2026, and during her stay, she hired a taxi and travelled to different locations within Sambalpur town.
On June 28, 2026, she allegedly left the hotel without paying her accommodation charges as well as the taxi fare, thereby cheating both the hotel management and the taxi driver.
During investigation, it was also found that the accused is suspected to be involved in similar cheating incidents in the past. Acting on credible information, Ainthapali Police apprehended her and arrested her in connection with the case.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused is also allegedly involved in similar cheating cases in other states.
Further investigation is underway.
