Bhubaneswar: Doctors of Capital Hospital staged a silent protest, wearing black badges, against the alleged assault on a fellow doctor by a patient’s relative demanding extra security in government hospitals, strict action against attackers, and better legal protection for medical staff.
The protest follows Friday’s incident in which doctor Janmejay Mishra was allegedly attacked by Bindusagar Rout, a patient’s relative, at Orthopaedics Department. As a result, doctor Mishra’s hand was fractured, and a hospital dresser was also assaulted.
According to reports, a patient from Nimapara visited Capital Hospital’s Orthopaedics Department with a hand fracture. His relative, Bindusagar Rout, asked doctor Janmejay Mishra for immediate treatment. As the OPD was closed, Mishra suggested the Casualty ward instead. When Rout’s request was declined, he allegedly attacked the doctor with a helmet, fracturing his hand. When a hospital dresser, Ratikant Bal intervened, he was also assaulted.
Later, the accused was detained by security and handed over to police.
The incident has sparked concerns over healthcare workers’ safety with doctors staging protest seeking protection from unscrupulous elements on hospital premises.
