Bhubaneswar: In a world where truck drivers are often stereotyped negatively, one man from Baleshwar district has emerged as a shining example of humanity and courage.
According to reports, Mrityunjay Kumar Ghosh (51), a resident of Gobardhata area under Jaleswar block in Baleshwar district, was returning late Friday night with his truck loaded with chips from Chandikhole. It was around midnight on the National Highway near Phuladi on the outskirts of Balasore town when a married woman suddenly jumped in front of his speeding truck in what appeared to be a suicide attempt. Displaying remarkable presence of mind, Mrityunjay slammed on the brakes and managed to stop the vehicle just in time, narrowly averting a tragedy.
Instead of driving away, he parked his truck on the side of the road and approached the woman. What followed was a deeply moving act of kindness. As he gently inquired about her distress, the woman poured out her heart — revealing years of relentless torture by her in-laws. Her husband had allegedly kept her confined at home for a long time. Having finally managed to escape, she had decided never to return and had chosen to end her life that night.
Mrityunjay listened patiently and strongly dissuaded her from taking such a drastic step. He then brought her into his truck and drove her to his own home, reaching there around 3 am.
Due to heavy rainfall on Saturday morning, he kept her safe at his residence. On Sunday, once the rain subsided, he contacted her maternal uncle (mausa), counselled the family, and personally ensured she was safely reunited with her relatives. He also informed her parental family, who had been frantically searching for her.
The woman’s family expressed immense gratitude and praised Mrityunjay’s noble act.
Speaking about his decision later, Mrityunjay said he could not have left a woman alone and vulnerable on a deserted stretch of highway — especially in an area known to be crime-prone — at such a late hour. He felt it was his duty not only to save her life but also to guide her away from a permanent mistake.
Meanwhile, Sujata Nayak, a member of the State Child Rights Protection Commission and a noted social activist, was moved by the story. She immediately contacted the Sadar Police Station and held discussions with the officer in charge. The police have since called the woman’s husband, in-laws, and others to the station for counselling and have initiated an investigation into the alleged torture.
Ghosh’s act of compassion has earned widespread admiration across the community. In a profession often overlooked or misunderstood, he has reminded everyone that humanity knows no boundaries — and that one thoughtful decision can save a life and restore hope.
