Bank Releases Rs 19,402 To Jitu Munda Family In Keonjhar After Skeleton Row

Keonjhar:  Odisha Grameen Bank officials on Tuesday visited Dianali village in Keonjhar district and, in the presence of villagers and public representatives, handed over ₹19,402 from a deceased woman’s account to her family after completing due documentation.

The Indian Red Cross Society has also provided ₹20,000 to support the cremation, bringing relief to the bereaved family a day after a shocking incident triggered outrage across the state.

The development follows an unusual episode at the Maliposi branch of Odisha Grameen Bank under Patana block on Monday, where Jitu Munda (50) exhumed his elder sister Kalara Munda’s skeleton and brought it to the bank premises while demanding withdrawal of her deposited money.

According to reports, Kalara Munda (56) of Dianali village under Erendei panchayat had died on January 26 this year due to a stomach ailment. Around ₹19,402—proceeds from the sale of a bullock—had been deposited in her bank account. Jitu had reportedly made multiple attempts to withdraw the amount but was unable to do so due to lack of proper documentation and clarity regarding the account nominee.

Police officials from Patana police station, including the IIC and other personnel, reached the bank after the matter escalated and counselled Jitu. The skeleton was later taken back and reburied with his assistance.

Subsequent inquiry by the district administration revealed that the deceased woman had three legal heirs—Jitu Munda, Shankara Munda, and Gurubari Munda—and that the nominee mentioned in the account had died earlier. Officials said a lack of awareness, illiteracy, and a reported family dispute contributed to the incident.

Acting swiftly, local authorities facilitated issuance of the death certificate and legal heir certificate. Senior bank officials then processed the claim and ensured disbursement of the amount at the village itself, restoring normalcy.

The incident drew sharp reactions from political leaders. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari termed it a “lack of humanitarian approach” and said action would be taken against those responsible.

Opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal and the Indian National Congress, also criticised the episode, calling it deeply unfortunate and raising concerns over the treatment of vulnerable citizens.

The incident, which occurred in Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s home district, has sparked a wider debate on procedural rigidity, financial literacy, and the need for sensitivity in public service delivery.
