Bhubaneswar: In a significant celebration of India’s global diaspora, around 4,000 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from 70 countries are expected to participate in the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), which will be inaugurated tomorrow (Jan 8) at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar.
The city, famously known as the Temple City of India, has been beautifully adorned with decorations, swings, and vibrant displays that showcase the rich cultural heritage and art of Odisha. The capital city is also gleaming with lights, creating a festive atmosphere, especially during the night.
The three-day event, running from January 8 to 10, is being organized in partnership with the State Government of Odisha. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention aims to celebrate and promote India’s health and cultural achievements as part of the national celebrations for Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in Bhubaneswar aboard a special Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft at 8 p.m. on January 8, marking his first visit to Odisha in 2025. The Prime Minister will attend the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on January 9.
Parallel to the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the Chilika Bird Festival is taking place this week. The festival highlights the exotic birds of Chilika, providing an opportunity for the overseas Indians attending the event to explore the region’s natural beauty.
Today, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited the historic Konark Sun Temple and the Puri Sri Jagannath Temple as part of his tour. After spending the night at the Konark Eco Retreat, Jaishankar visited the Sun Temple early this morning.
In anticipation of the large number of NRIs visiting Konark, senior district officials, including the Puri District Collector and the Superintendent of Police, have conducted a review of security, traffic, and other administrative arrangements.
