Bhubaneswar/Puri: Representatives from BRICS nations on Friday reaffirmed the importance of international cooperation in disaster management during the concluding day of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group meeting being held in Puri.
As part of the programme organised by the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), delegates from participating countries visited the Odisha State Watermanship and Lifeguard Institute (OSWALI) at Ramchandi to gain firsthand insight into the state’s water safety and rescue preparedness.
During the visit, OSWALI personnel demonstrated a range of lifesaving and rescue operations designed to prevent water-related accidents and respond effectively to emergencies in coastal and riverine areas. Equipped with life jackets, the delegates boarded boats and inspected the institute’s safety infrastructure and operational arrangements.
The visiting representatives closely observed the practical demonstrations and appreciated the expertise and preparedness displayed by the lifeguard teams. They also commended OSWALI’s contribution to managing water-related risks and enhancing public safety in Odisha.
The delegates expressed satisfaction over the conduct of the three-day international meeting and thanked OSDMA for its successful organisation and coordination.
OSDMA Executive Director Dr. Kamal Lochan Mishra, along with senior officials of the authority, was present during the visit and oversaw the programme.
The BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group meeting focused on strengthening cooperation among member nations in disaster preparedness, risk reduction and response mechanisms, with Odisha showcasing several of its best practices in disaster management.
