Bhubaneswar: BJP candidate Mamata Mohanta has been declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Odisha in the recent by-poll. As the sole candidate, she received the certificate from the Rajya Sabha election returning officer after the result was announced.
Mamata’s path to victory was cleared when BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan, who had filed his nomination as an independent, withdrew his paper. Party sources revealed that Pradhan’s nomination was a strategic move by the BJP, serving as a backup plan in case Mamata’s nomination was rejected.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi greeted Mohanta after she was reelected to the Upper House of the parliament.

A prominent Kudumi leader from Mayurbhanj district, Mamata was first elected to the Rajya Sabha from Odisha as a Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate in 2020. However, she resigned from her seat and the party on July 31. She joined the BJP the next day and was nominated as their candidate for the by-poll.
With Mamata’s unopposed election, the BJP’s strength in the Upper House from Odisha has increased to two, alongside Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Her victory marks a significant development in the state’s political landscape.
